171. Johann Jacob MEISNER (Theodorus MEISNER , Johann "John" Conrad MEISNER , Johannes MEISNER , Casper MEISNER , Johann Daniel MEISNER , Casper , Thomas ) was born 1 on 16 Aug 1819 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (ZLL). He was christened 2 on 3 Sep 1819 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (ZLL).
William and Bertha were born in Meisner's Section.
The other children were born around The Ovens.Article: "Flashback: A sailor went inland and founded lovely village"
By Bessie Laurn Mason
Many hundreds of tourists and native Nova Scotians travel every week over route 10, the paved highway from the Annapolis Valley to Bridgewater and other South Shore towns, and almost invariably they admire the beauty of the little community known as "Meisners' Section," midway between Springfield and New Germany.
But scarecely any one knows the history of the pioneers of the community.
Over 100 years ago, a hardy man? named Jacob Meisner, a native of the traditional treasure-cache in Lunenburg county known as "The Ovens," decided to quit his seafaring life, and move inland, to make a living for his large family, by farming. Fate directed his steps to a vast stretch of fertile meadow land, at the junction of the LaHave and the North rivers. Here graceful elm trees provided welcome shade for herds and flocks, as they fed on the lush green grass which in summer stretches like a magic carpet from the water's edge to the wooded hills rising like ramparts in the distance; everlasting sentinels placed there to guard the lovely valley, through which the rivers glide on their way to ocean.
To this primeval valley, Jacob brought his wife, Eva, their eight children, and all their belongings; here on the banks of the LaHave River, he built a house and held undisputed "squatter's claim" to the district.
Ever since that time, the community has been called "Meisner's Section," and the bridge spanning the river is Meisner's Bridge. Two more children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Meisner after they settled here, William and Bertha.
Mr. and Mrs. Meisner were unacquainted with the English language until after moving to the new home, and their youngest daughter, Bertha, wife of Jonathan Morrison, of Springfield, had among her treasures during her long lifetime, her father's old German Bible. They were Lutherans.
As the four sons, Stephen, Geoffrey, Samuel, and William, reached maturity and considered establishing homes of their own, their father helped each one build a house, and gave him land for a farm; thus the four boys owned adjoining properties.
The six daughters, Sophia, Sarah, Christine, Martha, Cassandra and Bertha, were taught by their mother, to spin; and by their father, to weave. Many and beautiful were the bolts of woolen and linen cloth which came from their noisy looms.
But all that was more than a century ago, and time has changed things. Jacob and Eva Meisner and their offspring have been dead many years. Only three grandchildren of Jacob and Eva now live in the community - Stanley and Otto Meisner, and Sanford Teale.
Placid and peaceful enough is the scene during most of the year. But when heavy spring rains come, and the tributary brooks which empty into the LaHave and North Rivers are fed by melting snow from surrounding mills, then the angry accumulation of water, held back by ice-floes and driftwood, rushes beyond its low-lying banks, flooding most of the erstwhile quiet and lovely intervale; and the picture presented called to mind Longfellow's description of the Land of Evangeline, at the season when flood-gates opened and welcomed the mighty Atlantic to wander at will o'er the meadows.
At these times, the men folk travel in boats or rafts to tend the cattle in their barns, cellars fill with river water, and floating trees and ice-floes threaten the dwellings.
Beautiful elms still droop in graceful shade, and cast their shadows across the waving grass and grain fields; lowing herds wade knee deep in the cool stream and quench their thirst, as of old.
And the restful beauty of a summer day at Meisners' Section is just as appealing to travellers in 1963 as it was to Jacob Meisner more than a century ago.
