In 1884 John Soloman Meisner (1858-1931) and his wife Mary Jane Lang (1865-1899) sailed from Marie Joseph, Nova Scotia by small boat landing at the Brae, Prince Co., P.E.I. where they rented until 1886 when they again set sail; this time around North Cape until they landed at Stanhope where John decided to settle.

Their first home was rented from a family by the name of Strickland and was located at Stanhope Point. In October, 1894, John purchased a lot of land at Stanhope Corner from George and Isabella Shaw (f37-Db73) for the sum of $35.00 cash.

A lobster factory at Stanhope Lane was purchased and torn down, the pieces were moved by horse and cart to Stanhope Corner and rebuilt into a two-storey house over a cellar with a foundation of Island sandstone. The well, which had an abundance of fresh, clear water was only 15 feet deep. As John was a boat builder and fisherman, the next building erected was a boat house where he worked. Later this was extended to house animals and supplies. A very good craftsman, he also made some furniture. One chest of drawers is still in use today. John and Mary were of the Anglican faith and most of their family were baptized at Port Hill Anglican Church.

Abner (Bert) son of John Soloman and Mary Jane married Eleanor Jean Gurney of West Covehead, PEI and lived at Stanhope Corner. Bert was a fisherman out of Covehead Harbour for 62 years, starting at 12 years of age. He purchased an additional 30 acres from the Hudson family in 1918 and had a small farm in conjunction to his fishing. The Post Office was in their home for 25 years and Eleanor served as Post Mistress for the area from 1939 to 1961. An active member of Stanhope United Church, Bert attended services regularly and also looked after the cleaning, heating and lights in the Sanctuary for many years. He received payment up to $20.00 for this service - it surely covered the cost of materials needed. Parent of a large family, the depression proved a difficult time, but Bert managed to provide for his family and give assistance to others by providing fish for their tables - sometimes he was repaid in money or goods, others never made payment nor was it requested. A Statement often made by Bert was "I'll receive my reward for that in the next world," or if someone did something hurtful to us children he said, "never mind, chickens always come home to roost." Another quote used by Bert when asked how he was, "fair to middling." First buriel service held in Stanhope United Church was his in March, 1965.
