Funeral Notice:
Laing - Funeral Service was held recently for Mrs. Effie E. Laing, aged 80. Widow of Albert Laing of West Liscombe, Guysborough Co. Born in West Liscombe, she was the daughter of the late Jefforey and Katherine Pace, her husband died several years ago, also a son Melvin; surviving are two sons, Lloyd of Little Liscombe, and Murray of Milton, Queens County; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, two brothers, George of Halifax, and Warren of Ontario, and step-brother Manly Langille. Mrs. Laing was buried at Fairview Cemetery.
Effie married 1 Albert LAING [scrapbook] son of Daniel LAING and Mary Frances "Fanny" BAKER on 20 Jun 1905. Albert was born 2, 3 in 1871. He died 4 on 24 Oct 1949.
{1949} LISCOMB, Nov. 1-- The death occurred at Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital at Sheet Harbor, October 24 of Albert Laing of West Liscomb, Guysboro County in his seventieth year. He was a son of the late Daniel and Fanny Laing of West Liscomb, Guysboro County. He is survived by his widow, Formerly Effie Pace and three sons, Lloyd, fishing out of Cape Breton, Murray of Liverpool, N.S. and Melvin at home, also two sisters (Tina) Mrs. Badell of Ottawa and (Lucy) Mrs. White of Trenton, N.S. The funeral was held at his home on Saturday afternoon October 29, conducted by Rev. Douglas H. Sherren of the Anglican parish at Liscomb. Interment was in the family lot at West Liscomb.

Source John Rose: "My aunt, Magdalene (Madge) married James (Jim) Canary, who died a few years back. She knew of your grandmother [Minnie] very well, as well as your father and his brothers. She only really knew Minnie and Anne. She stated that Min (that is what she calls her) went totally blind the last 10-15 years of her life due to diabetes, and Carlie (that is what she calls him) built a small house on a piece of land for her as she was very independent."

Source John Rose: "I have heard various stuff over the years stating that my grandmother, Bessie, had her name changed to Elizabeth when she was baptized in the Catholic Church...to get married to Jack (John T.) Rose. This apparently caused some problems amongst her family, especially Margaret."

Source John Rose: He left home when quite young (9 or 10) because his father had remarried and he didn't get along with his step-mother. He joined the army in WWI and as he was too young to enlist, he took his cousin's name, Tom, altering his birth certificate to read John Tom Rose.
It is believed he was the deputy mayor of New Waterford for a couple of years.
He was mine manager of #12, #16, #1b and #26.
He was killed in the mine on October 4, 1949 at 11:15 a.m.
He was born March 21, 1898 and died at 51 1/2 years of age.Huntington's Disease runs in the family or as it was known then "St.Vitus Dance." Jeremiah died (1939) of this disease. This disease has killed my uncle and three of my aunt's on my dad's side.

White of Dartmouth, N.S.; two step-sisters, Maude - Mrs. Emery Meisner of Port Hawkesbury, NS; Naomi - Mrs. Dougal Fleet of Ecum Secum West, Halifax Co., NS. Three step-brothers, George and Everett of New York, and Lester of Dartmouth, NS. One grandchild, Nancy. He is buried at St. Luke's Cemetery, Liscombe, NS.The 1891 Census for Guysborough Co., NS, Marie Joseph indicates there was a Manuel Langille in the same household as Samuel Meisner and Mary Fleet. He was aged 7 in 1891, which would make him born in 1884.
